Colorado - USA (29 June - 15 July 2012) |
|||||||
|
The state of Colorado is located in the mid west of America. The western half of the state is dominated by the Rocky Mountains and is a fabulous place to cycle. Covering a distance of approximately 600 miles, we will climb several passes many over 10,000 ft as we criss-cross the Continental Divide. Colorado is a high state, with Denver sitting at 5280 ft, and thus we will be climbing from a hgh base. This will be a moving-on tour with luggage transfer. There will be some long climbs and participants must feel comfortable with gradients of 5-9%. Bikes with low gears recommended. After a day to acclimatise to the elevation difference and to recover somewhat from the time change, the route will head west into the Rocky Mountains, passing through Cripple Creek (a former mining centre), Royal Canyon (where you can visit the suspension bridge spanning the canyon 1500 ft above it), Gunnison, Aspen (famous for skiing but also a popular summer resort) and Breckenridge. The route then passes through Rocky National Park and fabulous scenery before climbing Trail Ridge Road (12,183 ft) and descending to Estes Park where the cycling ends. Flights Heathrow - Denver This is a Grade 3 tour - see grading information.
